Council temporarily pauses line marking program to address resident parking priorities

20th February 2024

At the Tuesday 23 January Council Meeting, Council passed a motion to temporarily suspend new line marking activities on local roads within City of Prospect to maintain the city’s current on-street parking availability.

The Australian Road Rules, which form the basis of road regulations in each Australian state and territory, govern how Council oversees parking management. This includes issuing expiation notices for violations under these rules.

City of Prospect specifically undertakes line marking activities within our city to ensure that residents and visitors alike are aware of the road rules applicable to our local streets. This effort aims to bring attention to road rules and parking regulations that motorists may not otherwise be aware of, contributing to a safer and more informed community.

The Council's recent motion demonstrates a proactive response to concerns raised by our community, especially those regarding the effects of new line marking. The intention was to enhance road safety and clarify existing parking arrangements, but inadvertently led to a reduction in on-street parking availability.

Recognising parking as a significant concern for our residents, Council is committed to finding a balance between road safety through effective line marking and ensuring ample on-street parking remains available for both residents and visitors.

To find a balance between line marking activities and preserving on-street parking availability, Council will be participating in a road line marking and parking signage workshop in April 2024. This workshop will consider the concerns raised by the community and assess the impact of new line marking on historical parking arrangements as case studies.

We thank our residents for their understanding and cooperation as we work towards maintaining a safe and functional road network while addressing the parking considerations.
