Shovels hit the soil on $5m co-designed Broadview Community and Sports Hub
A Broadview Community and Sports Hub designed to make Australian football more accessible to women and support a wide range of community use is about to break ground in Broadview.
Less than six kilometres from Adelaide’s CBD, City of Prospect is creating a brand new $5 million hub, focusing on future-proofing local sports and recreation resources, and broadening their availability to the wider community.
City of Prospect Mayor Matt Larwood said the new Broadview Oval Community and Sports Hub will be a contemporary and long-lasting community asset.
“It’s fantastic to finally break ground and see this important project delivered for the Broadview area, and City of Prospect as a whole,” Matt said.
“The commencement of construction comes after more than two years of consultation with our community, in particular our unique Community Reference Group created specifically for this project.”
Broadview Football Club President, Shane Hodby said the redevelopment included constructing a new multi-level building, which is expected to be completed by December 2023.
“There will be spaces on the upper level available for the community to casually hire for groups of up to 280 people, which include use of a kitchen, bar and additional amenities,” Shane said.
“There’s also a gymnasium which will be available for the community, accessible toilets, and a café/kiosk.”
The redevelopment will also provide a reinvigorated home for the mighty Broadview Football Club, including additional home and away changerooms and amenities to support increasing female participation in football.
Surrounding landscaping will be updated to suit Broadview’s surrounding identity of leafy eucalypt trees, green grass and natural earth tones.
The Broadview Community and Sports Hub is funded in part through a $1.5 million grant from the Government of South Australia through the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing.
South Australian Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Hon Katrine Hildyard MP said the State Government is proud the development was progressing and would ensure more community members engaged in a range of sports.
“Sport brings us together and allows people to enjoy a sense of belonging and improve their physical, mental, and emotional health and wellbeing. This development will serve the local community well and enable more people, including more girls and women, to participate equally and actively," MP Hildyard said.
“Thank you to all who have advocated for, and worked towards, the project's commencement, including Lucy Hood MP and Andrea Michael's MP, City of Prospect and a number of passionate local community club members.”
City of Prospect CEO Chris White said the Council will make every effort to minimise impacts to residents, businesses and the local community during construction.
Some car parking will continue to be available near the building site, and the walking/running track around Broadview Oval’s perimeter will be maintained for the public,” Chris said.
“The dog park and playground will remain unaffected and surrounding residents have been provided with a detailed notification about the project’s commencement by our contracted delivery partner Sarah Constructions.”
