Weekly Food Organics Green Organics Collection Trial
In September 2023, City of Prospect and East Waste will be trialling a more environmentally and economically sustainable waste and recycling service that is better aligned to waste streams and landfill diversion.
During the trial, participating households will have a switch in their bin collections:
- FOGO (green lid) bin will be collected weekly
- General waste (red lid) bin will change to a fortnightly collection
The trial area will be limited properties in the Thursday pick-up zone (see map), and occupiers will be contacted with relevant information in the coming weeks.
The main change is switching bin collection frequencies so that the green FOGO bin is collected weekly and the red landfill bin is collected fortnightly. Recycling bin frequencies will remain unchanged.
January 2024 Weekly FOGO Collection Trial update
After conducting an audit of a selection of bins in the FOGO trial area, we are excited to share with you some outstanding results:
- FOGO-ers are diverting 28% more waste from landfill by recycling more resources, achieving an impressive 70% overall diversion rate. Comparatively, residents and businesses not participating in the trial had only a 42% landfill diversion.
- This equals to 2.9kg less sent to landfill per week!
- 41% of food is now being recycled in the FOGO-ers bins as opposed to 14% food of non-participants.
