Resource Recovery Hub

Did you know not all recyclable items can in fact be placed in your yellow recycling bin? There are specific items that can either be too small, too fragile or too hazardous to survive the trip from your kerb to the depot.

Resource Recovery Hub

This is why we have introduced our very own Resource Recovery Hub in the Prospect Library at Payinthi.

Our residents are now welcome to get rid some of the more difficult to recycle items, such as batteries, light globes, small e-waste, fluorescent tubes and more through our handy hub.

Check out the complete list of items we are able to accept below.

What happens to the items?

Each of the items received in the hub will be reused and recycled to support initiatives such as animal conservation, eyeglasses for people in need, and other initiatives.

Valuable metals and minerals such as copper, aluminium, steel, Manganese, Zinc, Lithium, Cobalt and Nickel will also be extracted from some of these items, which have abundant uses, as well as strong recycling attributes.

Click on the specific heading in the list below, and find out what happens to each item!

A wide range of globes are accepted including:

  • Fluorescent lamps
  • Halogen lamps
  • Bulbs
  • Incandescent globes

Conditions

  • Broken globes are not allowed, please place items in the slot gently
  • Excludes commercial quantities – visit Which Bin for commercial recycling options.

How it is recycled

As a lamp recycler, Ecocycle provides a comprehensive service for the collection and recycling of lamps, fluorescent tubes and light globes.

Fluorescent tubes and lamps also contain glass, aluminium and other metals which are recycled into new products, reducing Australia’s overall carbon footprint.

If you have any glasses or sunglasses, that you no longer use or need, then why not recycle them to be refurbished for people in need.

How it is recycled

Our glasses are collected by the Prospect Blair Athol Lions Club. The Lions Recycle for Sight Program distributes regraded, or refurbished spectacles to many parts of the world to Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs and other humanitarian organisations for distribution to people in need, with no expense or obligation for the recipient.

How it is recycled

Electronic Recycling Australia offers a two-tiered approach to reusing & recycling. The first step is to identify any goods that can be reused. After all, why recycle something that still works and may have value to someone else?

Goods that no longer work are sorted and materials dismantled. They aim to recover as much as 95% of usable materials, diverting materials from landfill. Materials are sorted into categories – metal, glass, printed circuit boards, plastic and potentially hazardous materials – and shipped to environmentally responsible final processors. They have a sophisticated shredding system, separating ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and non-metals. Precious materials are recovered from items including printed circuit boards, cables, metals and plastics.

You can help support primate conservation in Africa simply by recycling your old mobile phones and tablets.

Conditions

  • For safety and privacy please remove private information from any devices before dropping them off.

How it is recycled

Zoos SA is helping divert mobile phones from landfill. By recycling your old phones, you will be conserving natural resources, reducing the need to mine and protecting the environment. Some donated phones will also be refurbished and reused, providing communication to people who cannot afford phones. Others will be dismantled, and their compartments reused in other technology, ensuring minimal waste.

When you donate your unused phones to Zoos SA, the funds generated through recycling directly supports on-ground work with Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the Jane Goodall Institute Australia.

Fluorescent (fluoro) tubes contain mercury which is a toxic metal that needs to be properly recycled and kept out of our environment.

  • Ask customer service staff to help with disposal into the compartment
  • Fluorescent tubes up to 1.2 metres long only
  • Broken tubes are not allowed
  • Excludes commercial quantities – visit Which Bin for commercial recycling options
