Three tiers of government partner for Prospect

Published 24th September 2024

Council is pleased to announce that City of Prospect has been awarded $7.4m in Federal and State Government grant funding to complete Stage 1B of the Churchill Road Drainage Upgrade project.

This significant investment will reduce flood risk, protect critical infrastructure, and support opportunities for new development in our city’s west.

As part of the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund, Council has been awarded a $3.7m grant, matched by an additional $3.7m from the South Australian Stormwater Management Authority.

This funding is complemented by a $3.7m contribution from Council.

Mayor of City of Prospect, Matt Larwood, expressed his gratitude for the funding and highlighted the project’s importance.

“Flood mitigation is a top priority for our city,” said Mayor Larwood.

“This significant milestone demonstrates our commitment to protecting our residents and businesses from the devastating impacts of flooding."

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of both the federal and state governments in making this project a reality.”

The Churchill Road Drainage Upgrade will see the construction of a new high-capacity stormwater trunk drain between the flood-prone area to the east of Churchill Road and the Hindmarsh Enfield Prospect channel on the western side of the Gawler rail corridor.

Upon completion, the upgrade will significantly reduce flood risk to 88 properties and protect critical transport infrastructure.

Additionally, it will assist Renewal SA’s Prospect Corner housing development.

This latest funding allocation for Stage 1B brings the total funding for the project to $15.6m, with Stage 1A being supported by the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program, the Stormwater Management Authority, and Council.

Mayor Larwood emphasised the collaborative efforts of all three tiers of government.

“This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when governments work together for the common good,” Mayor Larwood said.

“The partnership between the federal, state and local government has been instrumental in securing the funding necessary to deliver this vital infrastructure.”

“Together, we’re building a more resilient and sustainable future for our community.”

The section of drain alongside the Prospect Corner development will be constructed as an early works package in September and October 2024, through a partnership between Council and Renewal SA.

Further design development and engagement with service authorities is currently underway, with the remaining construction commencing in early 2025.

Works are expected to be completed within 12 months.
