Children's Writing Competition

Each year during Children’s Book Week, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators.

Teachers and librarians conduct activities relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.

In line with this, Prospect Library will conduct its annual children’s writing competition which will culminate during Book Week, Saturday 17 August - Friday 23 August.

This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Reading is My Secret Power’, and students are encouraged to submit an entry based on the theme.

There will be three categories with a restriction on word count:

  • Reception to Year 2  - no more than 100 words
  • Years 3 to 5 - no more than 250 words
  • Years 6 to 7 no more than 500 words

Further guidelines are available at the Library or on

A first prize of a $150 book voucher will be awarded in each category, along with a $30 book voucher for an honourable mention in each category.

The winner of the Years 6-7 category will be also presented with the perpetual ‘Jenni Cotton Memorial Trophy’.

Entries can be individual or a class entry, so schools are welcome to participate.
