Buildings and Fences

As most property owners are aware, a building requires ongoing maintenance to ensure it remains fit for purpose and safe to live in. As buildings age, structural weaknesses can develop and failures may occur. This is also true for other types of structures, such as fences, which over time can weaken or may have been modified in a manner that means that they are no longer safe.

While responsibility for maintenance of buildings rests with the property owner, Council has the authority under the Development Act to issue emergency orders in the event that a building is demonstrated to be unsafe. Emergency orders may require the undertaking of urgent works to make the building safe and/or requiring that people evacuate the building until it is made safe. In some cases, the demolition of the building will be required, especially if it poses a threat to public safety.

Concerns about potentially unsafe buildings can be reported to the Development Services Team via email.
