Cities for Climate Protection

The City of Prospect was a participant in the Australian Government's Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia Program. CCP Australia is an international trade-marked programme of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) which is an innovative international campaign that helps local governments and their communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their subsequent impact on the environment.

City of Prospect was one of 18 metropolitan Adelaide Councils who have participated in the CCP Program, and one of 218 participating Councils Australia wide (March 2007, CCP website).

The CCP Program is a strategic framework, consisting of a five milestone framework:

Milestone 1 - Establish a base year emissions inventory and forecast for the corporate and community sectors - Completed 2002.

Milestone 2 - Set an emissions reduction goal target - Endorsed by Council June 11, 2002.

Milestone 3 - Develop a greenhouse reduction strategy - incorporated into the Environmental Action Plan 2002-2005 (adopted by Council on November 26, 2002).

Milestone 4 - Implement the greenhouse reduction strategy - Ongoing.

Milestone 5 - Monitor and report on emissions and implementation of actions and policies - Completed June 2007.

Some key actions that have been undertaken by Council to achieve the emissions reduction goals set through the CCP Program include:

  • Energy efficiency incorporated into the rebuild of the Civic Centre post-fire;
  • Purchase 20% accredited Green Power for all of Council's electricity consumption;
  • St Helen's Park Solar light (all night operation)
  • Home energy efficiency self audit kits for residents - available for loan through the Prospect library.
