E-Waste Recycling

City of Prospect is committed to reducing waste to landfill. especially its Electronic Waste (E-Waste) recycling program. This program is aimed at encouraging you to recycle your unwanted electronic waste rather than sending these items to landfill.

E-Waste is any item with a cord, battery or switch and is one of the fastest growing waste streams in Australia. Historically E-waste has been sent to landfill, however since 2013 all e-waste has been banned from landfill. E-waste contains valuable and rare materials such as gold and copper which can be recovered and reused. It also contains a range of hazardous materials that can be potentially damaging to the environment if not disposed of correctly. Unwanted e-waste needs to be taken to a suitable e-waste recycling facility for dismantling and re-manufacturing. Electronic waste should not be placed in any of your kerbside bins.

Under the Product Stewardship Act 2011, The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (the Scheme) has been established and provides Australian householders and small business with access to FREE collection and recycling services for televisions and computers.

Items that will be accepted for free include:

  • Televisions analogue, LCD, flat screens
  • Computer monitors
  • Computer towers
  • Printers, scanners, keyboards, mice
  • White goods
  • Microwave ovens
  • Heaters
  • Computer cables
  • Ovens
  • Any item that uses an electrical plug and/or any battery driven items.

About 90% of televisions and computers can be recycled! E-waste contains non-renewable materials such as copper, nickel, tin, zinc and aluminum, but also hazardous materials including lead, mercury, cadmium and lithium. By recycling e-waste these materials are recovered and used to make new products.
