At present cats do not have to be registered and there is no official limit on the number of cats which can be kept. Council can prevent people from keeping cats (or other animals and birds) which are considered to be a nuisance or pose a health hazard.
Council strongly encourages responsible cat ownership.
The law provides that unidentified cats are regarded as strays and may be seized, detained and destroyed by Council Cat Management Officers.
Council hires cat traps to assist residents of Prospect to catch stray or feral cats on private property. They must then be taken to the Animal Welfare League within 12 hours to be humanely destroyed.
Hiring of traps costs $10.00 per week or $5.00 pensioner concession with a $100.00 refundable bond.
